According to Teaching Reading in the Content Areas: If Not Me, Then Who?, the RAFT strategy uses writing-to-learn activities to enhance understanding of informational text. Students demonstrate understanding through varied forms of assessment that more easily fit their different learning styles and abilities.

The idea of writing to learn goes back to the early philosophers. Many years ago when I was in graduate school at Tech, I studied how Cicero, the great orator, used writing to learn strategies in 1000 AD. So, this idea is not new by any means.

Of course in our day and time, we develop acronyms for many of our teaching strategies to remember the steps. RAFT is one of those acronyms
